muscle tissue from the uterus and threadlike fibers of connective tissue. Although
they are called tumors, fibroid are not cancerous.
Fibroid are very common, they occur in
2 or 3 out of every 10 woman over age of 35 yrs. They occur most often in women
between ages 30 to 50, although women in their 20s have them.
Its common to have more than one
fibroid some women may have as many as a hundred of it, Fibroid can be as small
as a pinpoint or as large as a basketball. They are usually round or oval in
shape, like a ball or an egg. Their texture is firm, like unripe peach.
Fibroid can grow in different parts of
the uterus, they are named according to which part of uterus they are found.
Fibroid that grow inside wall of the
uterus are called intramural fibroid, they are most common type of fibroid.
Fibroid that grow outside the wall of
uterus into the abdominal cavity are called subserous or subserousal fibroid.
A fibroid that is
attached to the uterus by a thin stalk is called a pedunculated fibroid.
What causes fibroid?
A fibroid starts as a single muscle cell in the
uterus, for reason that are not known, this cell changes into a fibroid tumor
cell and start to grow and multiply. Heredity may be a factor, its thought that
a muscle cell in the uterus may be programed from birth to develop to a fibroid
sometime perhaps many years after puberty (the start of menstrual periods)
After puberty the ovaries produce more hormones especially
estrogen. Higher level of these hormones may help fibroid to grow although exactly
how this might happen is not understand.
Symptoms of fibroid
For many women
fibroid causes no problems, more than half of women with fibroid do not know
they have them until their doctor tell them. The most common problems caused by
fibroid are: -
- Heavy or long menstrual periods i.e period that last more than seven days and menstrual flow may be very heavy, heavy menstrual flow can sometimes lead to anemia.
- Pressure on other organs:- large fibroid may press on organ in the pelvis-a basing shaped cavity in the lower abdomen containing a bladder, bowel and reproductive organ.
- If fibroid press on the bladder:- a woman may feel the urge to urinate frequently, she may pass only small amount of urine and she may feel as though she as not completely empty her bladder. If fibroids press on the bowel, she may fee constipate suffering from difficult, painful or infrequent movement of the bowel, or full after eating only a small amount of food.
- If fibroid press on one or both uterus (the tubes connecting the kidneys to the bladder) they may partially block the flow of urine. A woman may not be aware of this because it often not painful. Overtime however, this kind of blockage can lead to kidney infection or other serious kidney damage.
- Pain in the pelvis:- the pressure of large fibroid on other organ can cause pain in the pelvis. Sometimes if fibroid do not get the blood flow the need to sustain themselves, they generate or die. This may cause severe pain lasting for days or weeks, this pain may also occur if the stalk of a fibroids twists, cutting off blood supply to the fibroid. Rarely a fibroid may become infected and cause pain.
- Diet:- stay away from caffeine, a highly fiber diet is good or taking the excess estrogen from our body through the colon, if not it will re-enter to your blood stream. Stay away from conventional processed meat, beef especially eating organic meat.
Treatments
The treatment offered for fibroid will depend on whether or not the fibroid are causing any problems. Surgery is the standard treatment for fibroid that are causing pain, heavy or lengthy menstrual bleeding or other problems.
The two kinds of surgery mostly or commonly performed are hysterectomy and myomectomy.

Irregular vaginal bleeding, headaches, thinning of the hair, pain in the bones, joints and muscles sleep problems, mood changes, loss of sex drive.
